Situated on the west bank of the river Yamuna, Mathura and its surrounding region, popularly known as Brij Bhoomi, are important places of pilgrimage. The birth of lord Krishna (1500 BC) gave the city its sanctity.

In ancient times, it was a cultural centre of much renowned fame and received grea
t stimulus under Ashoka, in the spheres of sculpture and architecture. Later, Kanishka made it the capital of his eastern empire and the city became an important centre of trade, learning, arts and culture.

Present day Mathura abounds in places of religious and historical interest. Throughout the year, a number of fairs and festivals provide an opportunity to enjoy the folk music and dances of Brij. The Janmashtami celebrated here is very famous throughout the country. The Raslila is regarded as one of the most popular dramatic performances in India.

 

 

Dwarkadheesh Temple:
Built by Seth Gokuldass of Gwalior in 1914, this temple dedicated to lord Krishna is in the heart of the city. It is decorated during Janmashtami , Diwali, Holi , and other important festivals.


Gita Mandir:

On the Mathura-Vrindaban Road, the Gita temple is a modern structure with a number of paintings and carvings from Hindu mythological and religious literature. The whole of the Bhagwad Gita is inscribed on the Gita Stambh.

Jama Masjid:
The mosque lies in the very heart of the city and was built by Abe-In-Nabir Khan, the local governor in 1661 AD on the ruins of the Keshav Deo temple dedicated to Lord Krishna which was destroyed by Aurangzeb. This is the place where lord Krishna is believed to have been born in prison.

Sati Burj:
On the banks of the river Yamuna. Sati Burj is a slender,
four-storeyed, quadrangular tower of red sandstone, rising to a height of 17 metres. It was built in 1570 AD, by the son of Behari Mal of Jaipur to commemorate the ‘sati' sacrifice of his mother.

Shri Krishna Janma Bhoomi:
The foremost place of Hindu veneration, the birth place of lord Krishna is in Katra Keshav Deo. On the same site stands Aurangzeb's red stone mosque. Originally, there was a temple dedicated to lord Krishna, which was destroyed by Aurangzeb in 1669, in order to build the present mosque.

Vishram Ghat:
The most important bathing Ghat. Lord Krishna is said to have rested here after killing Kansa, the tyrant king of Mathura. The ‘aarti' in the morning and evening at the riverside is worth seeing.

Kans Quila:
Situated to the north of the Swami Ghat on the banks of the Yamuna, this ruined fort was built by Raja Man Singh of Amber. Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh lived here and built an observatory on the parapet of the fort.

Government Museum:
The museum contains fine sculpture, terracotta, coins, bronze objects dating from the 5th century BC to 1200 AD. The Mauryan, Sunga, Kushan and Gupta periods are well represented. The famous standing Buddha (5th century AD) can be seen here.

Mathura, the land of cows, is famed for its milk-based sweetmeats. A variety of mouth-watering savouries, especially ‘peda' are a well-known specialty of the town. Beads, brass statues, utensils for worship are available At Bengali Ghat, Chatta Bazar, Chowk.

Air : Nearest airport is Kheria( Agra), 62 kms.

Rail : Mathura is on the main lines of the central and western railways and is connected with all the major cities.

Road : Mathura is well connected by motorable roads to important tourist centres.

Local transport : Taxis, Tongas and Cycle rickshaws.
